BetterGambling reviews online casinos and bookmakers, so almost everything a gambling site knows about you never reaches us.
We still hold a little, mostly your email address if you join the newsletter. South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013, or POPIA, governs all of it and gives you control over how we use it.
What stays with the casino
Casinos hold a great deal about their players. We don't hold any of it.
Deposits, withdrawals and account balances
Bank card, bank account and voucher details
Identity documents, proof of address and other FICA paperwork
Game history, stakes and winnings
Casino usernames and passwords
Follow one of our links to a casino and everything from that point belongs to you and the operator, under its own privacy policy. They don't send us anything personal back.
The company behind this site
BetterGambling OÜ publishes BetterGambling.co.za and is responsible for the personal information on it. POPIA calls that role the responsible party. Registration number 17330351, registered office at Narva mnt 7a-616, Kesklinna linnaosa, Tallinn 15172, Estonia. Questions about your information go to [email protected].
Information we collect
Just three things.
Your email address, where you create an account or subscribe to the newsletter. The signup form doesn't ask for anything else, so an account here holds an email address and a password.
Your comments, where you leave one on a page. The name you choose and the comment itself appear publicly, exactly as you wrote them.
Technical data about your visit, such as your IP address, the pages you open and how long you stay. Analytics software produces this automatically and we read it in aggregate.
Our grounds for processing
Section 11 of POPIA lists the grounds a responsible party may rely on, and two of them apply here. Your consent covers the newsletter and your account, given when you tick the box and confirm your age.
Our legitimate interests justify the technical data, which tells us which pages people read and which ones fail them.
Retention periods
We keep newsletter data for five years from the date you subscribe, unless you unsubscribe first. Account data lasts as long as the account. Ask us to close it and the email address goes with it. Comments remain on the page until you ask us to remove one.
Transfers outside South Africa
BetterGambling OÜ has its registered office in Estonia, so your email address leaves South Africa when we handle it.
Section 72 of POPIA allows a transfer where you consent to it, and that is the ground we rely on. You give that consent when you subscribe to the newsletter or open an account.
South Africa doesn't keep a list of approved countries, so we name where your information goes and leave the judgement to you. Once you take back that consent, the transfer stops with it.
Cookies and analytics
Cookies are small text files a site places in your browser. Ours keep you logged in, remember your cookie choice, and let analytics software recognise a returning visit.
The banner on your first visit lets you accept or decline everything except the essentials. To change your mind, clear the cookies for this site in your browser and the banner appears again on your next visit.
Analytics cookies don't collect special personal information, and we don't place advertising cookies of our own.
Security and breaches
Access controls on the platforms we use protect what we hold. Section 22 of POPIA requires us to report a security compromise to the Information Regulator and to you as soon as reasonably possible after we find one. You would hear what happened, which information it touched, and what you can do about it.
Your rights
POPIA gives you rights over the information we hold. Write to [email protected] to use any of them.
Access: see everything we hold about you and get a copy
Correction: fix anything wrong or out of date
Deletion: we remove your information on request, unless the law requires us to keep it
Objection: challenge our use of your technical data, under section 11(3)
Withdrawal: stop the newsletter through the unsubscribe link in any message, or close your account by email
We answer requests as quickly as we can, and we tell you plainly if something falls outside what we can do.
Complaints
Raise it with us first through the contact page, and give us the chance to put it right. Where our answer leaves you unsatisfied, the Information Regulator handles POPIA complaints in South Africa and takes them through its own platform. Your right to approach the Regulator, or a court, survives anything written here.
